Challenges
As UTem expanded, the campus faced growing demand for higher quality services to teachers and students. The IT department had a number of challenges:
Bandwidth was being used for P2P downloads of movies and music, slowing network access for legitimate uses. UTem was therefore planning to increase bandwidth.
Adult entertainment and other types of illegal website were being accessed.
UTem’s network manager had poor visibility of their network’s status.
UTem’s IT department needed to offer consistently high service levels to its users, even in case of failure.
Benefits
After deploying SANGFOR appliances, network performance improved immediately:
P2P Control: UTem reduced the amount of P2P traffic, saving bandwidth and cutting budgets.
Web filtering: The SANGFOR IAM filters adult entertainment and similar sites that are inappropriate for an educational institution.
Reporting: The SANGFOR solution gives UTem’s network managers different views of the network, including bar charts, pie charts, and comparison charts based on user, time, application and so on. This gives them a better understanding of network usage and student activity.
Security: The solution supports hardware bypass. In case of failure, user access is not impaired.
