Optimizing Low Quality Networks

As geographically distributed, businesses can be limited by physical constraints, many enterprises and their branches interconnect with Internet-based VPNs or satellite links. Such lines generally have high latency or high packet loss, resulting in low network quality, low data transmission speed, and low network application responsiveness and efficiency.

Tests show that for a 2Mbps ADSL line under a maximum window size of 64K bytes, when network delay is less than 40ms, the line can reach the highest data throughput allowed by its bandwidth. However, when network latency gradually increases, line transmission efficiency will drop sharply and actual throughput would eventually become less than 10% of the maximum theoretical bandwidth.

A similar test on another line with 100Mbps bandwidth (64K byte windows) shows that when network latency is greater than 40ms, data throughput will decrease almost to the same level as 2Mbps lines. Therefore, in the case of longer network lag and improperly provisioned TCP windows, the data transmission capacity of 100Mbps bandwidth lines is hardly better than 2Mbps bandwidth lines.

Therefore, upgrading bandwidth can’t actually improve WAN transmission speed in low quality network. Only by improving WAN performance can companies truly realize and enjoy the potential high efficiency, management convenience and investment value of their organizational networks.

Solution:
1. The TCP Proxying and application proxying functions of SANGFOR’s WANO products reduce the number of interactions during data transmission and application utilization. This increases interaction responsiveness, and can mitigate delay-incurred low efficiency on the transport and application layers.

2. SANGFOR WANO’s proprietary HTP technology can actually lower the rate of network packet loss, improve link quality, accelerate data transmission and improve application systems’ efficiency.

3. SANGFOR WANO’s flow-cache function can, based on WANO link optimization and application optimization, reduce even more actual data transmission to further accelerate the network and improve application system efficiency and responsiveness.

Values of the Solution:
1. Browser/Server Application Acceleration Function
In a Browser/Server web business system, when remote access users have to wait a minute or longer to open a simple webpage, work efficiency is definitely reduced. From the user’s perspective, web services are generally thought of as being “fast” or “slow” and users tend not to need large data transfers. They just want a high-performance website that is responsive and fast to use. Therefore, it is necessary to provide an acceleration method for the transmission of web applications. SANGFOR’s WANO product line can accelerate web page access. The acceleration gateway can provide a ten-fold (10x) acceleration improvement, especially for static pages.

2. Client/Server Application Acceleration Function
Many Client/Server applications are designed to operate in LAN environments. Therefore, the application protocol design is not appropriate for a WAN environment. Usually, performance is sluggish and there are long delays while users wait for the client software to send and retrieve information from the servers.

In cases like these, SANGFOR’s WANO products provide application protocol acceleration, data stream caching, and strong data compression to optimize the network transmission efficiency of most popular application software, improving the speeds of client software communicating with their servers.

3. File Transmission Acceleration Function
File transmission on a network generally uses FTP, HTTP, network neighborhood, and other protocols that, by themselves, have no acceleration capability. As a result, when a large file is transported via the WAN, file transmission times are often extremely long and transmissions can fail due to long delays or high network packet loss rates. SANGFOR’s acceleration gateway can improve file transmission speeds by up to 40 times.

4. SQL Database Acceleration
There are currently many applications based on SQL databases and use SQL for access. SANGFOR’s WANO also provides acceleration functions for such applications, often achieving 40 times acceleration.
