Good AI vs. Evil AI

Using AI to Fight Fire with Fire

Good vs. Evil has been a theme in every form of life from the beginning of time. Good gains a foothold only to have evil shoot back with seemingly insurmountable odds. In movies and television, good always wins – but in life sometimes good needs to work a little harder and let’s be honest, it doesn’t always prevail.

AI is the next technology frontier, and true to form some AI is used for good, and some for evil.  We are all aware of the countless ways AI could improve our digital lives, but there are quite a few ways AI is being used and could potentially be used for evil in our modern IT world:

AI on the Fly
In the 2017 paper, “Generating Adversarial Malware Examples for Black-Box Attacks Based on GAN.”  authors detailed creation of a GAN algorithm capable of bypassing machine-learning-based security systems, meaning AI enables much more highly evasive malware. Look out for the potential AI “on the fly” learning, meaning malware codes could potentially change in real-time to avoid more traditional detection methods.

Zombies are Getting Smarter
‘Hivenets” and “swarmbots” are being developed which can independently communicate with smart IoT devices and propagate without the direction of centralized command. This technology is already being used in drones and robotics – so it’s not a stretch that it could be used for cyber-attack in the near future.

Spear Phishing Becomes Spear Catching
Phishing campaigns used to be marked by slipshod writing and unrealistic communication style which may not set off alarm bells but certainly makes end users uneasy for an undefinable reason. AI makes it possible for criminals to automate the analyzation process of countless genuine emails – creating a significantly harder to identify phishing product.

Good never exists in a vacuum. There is always help when it’s needed, whether it’s a surprise savior, weapon, wise teacher, sacrificial lamb or any number of other helpful boosts for the hero in his or her time of need. Sangfor NGAF backs you up by fighting fire with fire. Powered by AI – the good kind - Sangfor NGAF is a converged security solution providing protection against IPS, advanced threat, malware, viruses, ransomware and web-based attacks.
