Global Business Power Corporation
Smart DC-DR Solution with Sangfor aCloud

Customer Background

GBP stands for Global Business Power Corporation, which is a leading energy company (Top 3) in Philippines and produces adequate, reliable and cost-efficient power supplies through five subsidiaries and ten power generation facilities nation widely.

At year 2017, GBP decided to refresh its datacenter infrastructure since GBP needs a reliable, scalable, redundant and secured data center environment. However, the previous setup cannot meet their business requirements like hardware redundancy, auto backup, disaster recovery, disaster recovery simulation and ease-of-management.

Business Pain-Points

-- Managing multiple sites is complex. In each datacenter, there are many devices from various vendors. Computing virtualization is from VMware, switch and router is from Cisco, storage and physical server is from Dell. IT admin needs simultaneously open many tabs to monitor all devices. Sometimes they need to go to server room to troubleshoot directly since all devices are independently running.

-- Continuity of business system is weak. GBP’s business systems don’t have H.A. to avoid accident. Since lack of VMware vSAN or SAN, there is no failover or accident-triggered mechanism to keep business well-running if encounter power outrage or accidental disk plug-out. They have concerns on accident. Business continuity is also poor in peak hours, when access request from end users to core business systems like IBM Maximo or EDMS rapidly rises. Since DRS function requires enterprise license, resource cannot be expended automatically if virtual machine encounters insufficient resource issue.

-- Data is not being well-protected. The amount of time it should take to restore application functionality is too long. Approximately it took five days to restore application functionality (RTO=5 days). Normally IT admin need to remotely troubleshoot the defective system with help of local IT admin. The variable amount of data that will be lost during network downtime is too much. IT admin copies data from storage to tape every month as backup and there are many issues about that. Firstly, backup with tape takes a long time since this technology doesn’t come with high speed writing. Secondly, tape cannot backup updated data, IT admin must backup all data every month. Thirdly, due to lack of disaster recovery mechanism, IT admin must deliver the tapes from one site to another every month by flight so that plants can load the tapes when it is necessary, therefore RPO is between one week to one month, and this amount of time is not tolerable.

Sangfor Solution

The ideal solution must be stable, easy to manage and use, and able to keep data integrity. Sangfor provides GBP with tailor-made solution far beyond their expectations to accommodate their needs. GBP still keep three datacenters located in Makati, Cebu and Iloilo (Critical data in Makati is being backup in Cebu, Critical data in Cebu is being backup in Iloilo, Critical data in Iloilo is being backup in Makati). In each datacenter GBP consolidated all virtual machines with Sangfor aCloud and run them on Sangfor aServer and Dell servers. All business applications are running on these three clusters. On Sangfor aCloud platform, GBP activated many functional licenses. Basic license package includes aSV, aSAN and aNET. For backing up all data among three datacenters, GBP activated aDR. For managing and monitoring three sites, GBP activated aCMP. For compressing and optimizing data transactions, GBP activated vWANO.

End-User Experience

Management and monitoring become easy. aCMP provides a great tool to centrally monitor and manage all Sangfor clusters. With this management web-console, GBP can operate all maintenance and supervision activities on it like creating VM, monitoring status of hardware and aCloud software, percentage of backed up data, throughput of each site and status of each VM of all sites (usage of storage, CPU and memory), etc.

-- Business runs continuously without disruption. Firstly, GBP has a cross-site active-standby datacenter. When one VM or physical server encounters an accident, they can transfer the traffic to another city and business will not be influenced. Secondly, high availability is enabled on each aCloud cluster. Failover and aMotion will be triggered by any disruption/incident like power outrage, disk and cable plug-out, etc. Basically, what it does is migrating instantly from one node to another automatically. Thirdly, Sangfor solution also has a file level recovery capability to recover files from Image backup. Once VM is attacked by ransomware, they can recover the system asap. Critical systems’ stability and reliability have been greatly improved. Fourthly, through built-in Dynamic Resource Scheduling (DRS) in Sangfor aCloud, they are confident now the systems always have enough resources for end users.

-- Data is being well-protected and RTO/RPO is minimized. Through aCMP and aDR, RTO has been minimized from 1 week to 3 hours and RPO has been minimized from 1 month to 4 hours. Then, disaster recovery simulation, with a few clicks of a button, they can simulate if DR procedure is working or not. The most impressive thing is offsite backup optimization, with limited bandwidth capacity, Sanfor solution makes sure that GBP can transfer backup data offsite with at least 87% compression rate. GBP has 136G raw data daily, with vWANO and aCloud compression feature, post-compressed data is only 17.68G.
