Sangfor aCloud + WANO, They are Better Together

Sangfor aCloud introduces by far the most comprehensive and powerful disaster recovery capability on version 5.8.6. The disaster recovery solution based on aCloud is fully integrated and easy to use, offering a wide range of RPO protection levels from 1 second to 1 week to meet various applications’ requirements. Instant recovery can be achieved in minutes with 1-click failover to minimize downtime in the event of primary site failure.  Customer’s business is protected to the extreme at a fraction of cost as opposed to traditional DR solutions.

Compression is employed on aCloud to minimize data volume that needs to be sent over the wire to reduce bandwidth consumption, accelerating data transmission between primary site and secondary site which in turn facilitates better RPO in narrow-bandwidth environment. However, compression on aCloud alone is not enough in some extreme circumstances with very limited bandwidth. In some regions, bandwidth resource can be very expensive and high-quality link can take a big toll on IT budget. No worry, Sangfor WANO (WAN Optimization) is here to help.

Sangfor WANO (WAN Optimization) can be deployed in the WAN gateway of data centres and branch offices. Through traffic reduction, stream compression, stream cache, protocol acceleration and other leading technologies, Sangfor WANO can cut up to 70% of redundant traffic, reduce packet loss rate to below 1%, save 50 % of link costs and improve application speed by 3-10 times to achieve huge improvement for application performance & WAN speed.

With WANO adopted in the aCloud DR solution, data can be further compressed and save transmission time. To prove that, we did a test in our lab.

Test network topology:

Test scenario:
1. Run Oracle OLTP environment
2. Transmit incremental backup data and IO Log data
3. Add latency and packet loss on WAN port of WANO to simulate narrow-bandwidth environment, bandwidth is 30Mbps

Test result:

In the environment with 1% packet loss and 50-130ms latency
1. Sending incremental backup data with WANO turned on can reduce transmission time by half, bandwidth is also saved by half.
2. Sending CDP IO Log data with WANO turned on also result in significant bandwidth reduction.

In the environment with zero packet loss and zero latency
1. Sending incremental backup data with WANO turned on can reduce transmission time by 23% and further reduce bandwidth consumption.

All in all, in environments with poor and narrow-bandwidth network link, turning on aCloud compression and WANO can significantly reduce transmission time and bandwidth consumption. It’s recommended to deploy Sangfor WANO (or vWANO) in aCloud disaster recovery solution to save bandwidth. Furthermore, WANO also simplifies DR network setup by providing VPN connection between 2 sites. one stone two birds, Sangfor aCloud and WANO are better together in disaster recovery solution.
