Traditional 3 tier server, storage and network data systems work in tandem to support a company’s compute and storage, keeping applications, business processes and end-users running – but as business grows beyond the legacy architecture, the network slows to a limp. Don’t expect your 3-tiered architecture to grow with you. Each tier needs to be individually modified when attempting to scale out, meaning a significant time and money expenditure for your company.
Typically, 3 tier compute and storage architecture requires IT administrators to specialize in one or more components. While highly skilled staff are an asset to the department, their skills are better used for supporting digital transformation than reading time consuming logs or trying to find ways to make legacy infrastructure work in a digital world.
Long working hours and unproductive days take a toll on employee morale, and presenting IT managers with an issue that affects the server, storage and network teams (if you’re even lucky enough to have that many administrators) means a lot of moving parts and the potential for frustration between teams.
While a 3-tiered infrastructure does present a broader range of options in terms of storage and servers and can scale storage and compute needs as needed, this system isn’t designed to run distributed applications and takes a great deal of time and resources to scale out. In addition, as issues arise in different departments with different vendors – the water becomes even more murky.
The best way to combat these looming problems is by starting your research into “Hyperconverged Infrastructure” or a product like Sangfor’s aCloud (HCI)
. TEK Group
, an Italian enterprise based in Switzerland, produces high quality tire repair kits and found themselves expanding to a new production plant in Malaysia. By implementing Sangfor aCloud, the TEK Group IT manager can now run all IT services between Italy, Switzerland and Malaysia from one portal, and the company is ready to scale their infrastructure out as they continue to grow. In addition, now with HCI there is only one system, vendor and team to call in when expansion is needed.
Gartner explains the importance of HCI in their helpful article “How to Decide if Hyperconverged Integrated Systems Can Replace Traditional Storage”
