Just as we start to really think we have gotten the “jist” of what the cloud really is and what it can do – it’s changing again. IBM CEO Ginni Rometty made it clear that “IBM will become the world's number one hybrid cloud provider, offering companies the only open cloud solution that will unlock the full value of the cloud for their businesses." in response to their recent US$33 billion purchase of RedHat in 2018. That’s fantastic – everyone loves growth and innovation!  But what does it really mean?

Let’s break it down.

With public cloud, you are essentially renting an apartment in the cloud. It’s cheaper, scalable (relatively), reliable (ideally) and you don’t need to maintain it. Private cloud is owning your own cloud-apartment.  You can tailor it to your needs, it’s safer and more secure, and you can scale as needed if you can afford it. This scenario is good enough for the status quo with good reason – why go beyond?

Now…Hybrid Cloud. You own the apartment, the building and you could even rent out the space if you wanted too. Flexibility is the name of the game with more control over your data and security, the ability to manage costs granularly and the ease of being able to allocate the amount of power and security you need from your cloud to the areas of the business with the greatest (or smallest) need. You can’t search for the words “Hybrid Cloud” and not see the (seriously overused) phrase “the best of both worlds.”

1. Hybrid cloud is agile. Resources can be allocated when and how they are needed from a single management console – meaning business can adapt to needs in real time without wasted resources.

2. Scalability (both up and down) is possible without the need for a whole data center overhaul.

3. Hybrid cloud is more reliable because the workload is distributed across many data centers.

4. Hybrid cloud allows for the flexibility of storing sensitive data in a more security environment while running less private applications like email in a less security intensive environment.

Considering monoliths like IBM are investing heavily in hybrid cloud – it’s certainly worth a closer look. Sadly, it takes an act of God to find information on cloud technology that is both insightful and entertaining. It’s pretty dry subject matter, especially compared to the super sexy AI trend. Let’s interject some drama.

In an opinion piece for Network World, Fredric Paul, the editor in Chief for New Relic, Inc. says “Hybrid cloud is hot right now, but its long-term future is … cloudy at best.”  Can I get a hallelujah!  Finally someone not spouting hybrid-cloud-hype!  We suggest getting to know a bit more about both sides before making the decision on what is right for you and your business. We are well aware of the benefits of hybrid cloud – lets keep exploring. Think about this:

1. Use of a hybrid cloud requires data to be transmitted between cloud environments, making it significantly more vulnerable to attack.

2. Non-compliance with industry standards and regulations (GDPR, everyone) is serious and costly, and running a multi-cloud environment means keeping multiple environments secure and compliant.

3. When flexibility is the name of the game, more access points mean more potential weaknesses. Without strict and all-encompassing security protocols, every connection (BYOD) is a potential leak.

4. Management of a complex environment requires more sophisticated managers and there is a serious lack of security talent in the market. Fredric Paul hits the nail on the head when he says “it’s clear that owning your own security — no matter how well intentioned and well resourced — is hardly a guarantee of safety.”

Hybrid cloud is amazing and there has been some serious investment in the arena (ahem…IBM). Sangfor encourages giving some real thought to what cloud environment will work best for YOU and YOUR business before buying into the hype. Maybe hybrid cloud is the way to go for you – maybe it’s not. Sangfor wants to help you figure it out.
