Unlike the globally interconnected world of network security and cloud, Chinese network security and cloud data center infrastructure vendors are differentiating themselves through local, grassroots movements. According to a recent Gartner® report1, “Despite the growth opportunities, the infrastructure software-defined storage (iSDS) market in China is highly ‘fragmented’. “Sixty percent of Chinese enterprises will adopt iSDS technology in core data centers or public clouds by 2025, up from 30% today,” states Gartner, in their recent “Competitive Landscape: Chinese Infrastructure Software-Defined Storage Vendors” publication.1
Infrastructure software-defined storage separates storage from hardware. Wikipedia defines “software-defined storage” including some form of virtualization, allowing administrators to separately manage the hardware and software, in addition to performing, “data deduplication, replication, thin provisioning, snapshots and backup.” Software-defined infrastructure is used to control IT elements using software, instead of the traditional hardware controls, which provide far less flexibility. It has also been proven to reduce costs by limiting an enterprises dependency on software and hardware, and also by using virtualization and cloud, over traditional pricy hardware deployment.
The recent explosion of hybrid cloud adoption is no surprise, due to the many scenarios where it seems to be dominating. A few examples of hybrid cloud use cases include:
This flexibility and the many benefits of hybrid cloud are defining how we think about software and infrastructure. Enterprises are no longer locked-into big investments, choosing instead to go the software-defined route, proven to be more scalable and financially prudent.
